I just ordered the new v5.1 kit without the power supply. In the description it says, the power supply needed is 24V but the picture of the power supply you can also order from the shop shows 12v
So now I am a bit confused - what power supply does the new v5.1 kit need?

The V5 and V5.1 can be powered with PSU voltage from 12V to 48V. The recommended power supply that we sell and has been deeply tested is 24V (1.5A, 36W). We will replace the shop’s picture to avoid further confusion.

The shop’s PSU picture is fixed. Thanks!

What is the size (dimensions) of the plug?

70x40x30 mm is the size of the cap. It doesn’t include the plug, that depends of the country, being the european 40mm. The US is shorter.

I _think_ what @DeepBlueMind is asking about is the power input on the Zynthian V5.1.
It is a fairly common “barrel” connector used on many guitar pedals. I _believe_ it is 5.5x2.5mm but I’m not sure about that.

This power supply did work and fit:

and i did not need to use the adapter that came with it.

Yep. These are the “plug” dimensions 😉

ok, so… on that note, i did a little test a while back, powering one using a whole little chain of decoy and plug size converters (because it’s what we had sitting around), powering one of them from a usb powerbank, which worked exceptionally well, and… this made me go and look again. I’ve not got one, but this thing seems like it might do the trick without having to chain a bunch of dongles?

Going by the reviews, it doesn’t actually output 20V in all cases, but will output 15V in any case it doesn’t, and… apparently powers a push 3 happily. So, might just nab one of these, save me lugging around a large power brick, and also would let me power the thing directly from the built-in powerbank on the Anker Soundcore Motion Boom Plus i’ve got, for some in-the-park pixelfed friendly jamming, so to speak 😉

Thought i should share 🙂

Just to confirm what seems pretty clear and obvious, [but it isn’t](https://discourse.zynthian.org/t/powering-zynthians/8060): The original zynthian socket is really 5.5/2.5mm - ONLY!

These sockets are often made mutually compatible both with 5.5/2.5 and 5.5/2.1mm sizes. But usually the vendors/sellers don’t give you precise information. For the sockets it means to be physically 5.5/2.1, but tight enough to accommodate a 5.5/2.5 plug with the slightly larger central hole just as firmly as a 5.5/2.1-only plug. For the plugs it means they are technically 5.5/2.5, but tight enough to hold firmly also in a 5.5/2.1 socket with the slightly thinner central pin.

However, the Zynthian mainboard uses a socket which is physically 5.5/2.5. It means that it WON’T accept a physical 5.5/2.1-only plug with the smaller hole, because of its larger central pin (as happened to me) - in that case one needs a small plug convertor.

I have an intense hatred of barrel connectors for this and their complete lacking of standards…
Made worse by the need to use them.
The simple joys of plugging a reverse polarity supply into something sensitive is always present, and the differing voltages is a pain. I run from 20V batteries via buck converters which does at least address the voltage concerns.

That’s why I linked to your thread! 😃

Fortunately, I have not met many instances of the “negative on pin” versions yet (just in one case, I guess). But I have seen different versions of the “not-tight-enough”.

OK! You can check the full specification for the V5 mainboard’s power connector:

It’s the LRJ-001 (2.5mm)
