I will also order a RPi5 Zynthian when available, the Pi I already have .
BR
Please, add me to the list. I would like to work with the V5/V5.1 twins as soon as feasible ;-). The work with the keyboard and mouse is possible, but not very music-friendly. Thank you for the great work!
Seems the V5 is available again (without RPi) if you want it :
For me, I’ll wait for the v5.1 because I think the RPi5 will be faster
I think that’s a wise decision. However, keep in mind that even for people who buy the Zynthian V5 kit in its Raspberry Pi 4 configuration they will probably have a path to upgrade to RPi5 with some, hopefully not too large, associated cost.
You will either have to do “some surgery” or replace nearly everything, as @jofemodo already presented.
I am not sure what such a “surgery” can encompass, but considering the fact that nearly everything needs some modification, I am afraid it may not be as trivial…? Do not forget that Pi5 has ethernet and USB connectors swapped, so I suppose you will also need to cut the outer metal case - something I personally would be afraid of (since I always screw such things up with ugly cuts).
I agree @wanthalf , it won’t be trivial. And I see your point re the case.
I would quibble with the phrasing:
Simply because I think the top half - the screen, buttons, knobs-encoders - stay as is. But I don’t think it matters - as @jofemodo said, the conversion seems wasteful.
We have decided to not support the “total” conversion from V5 to V5.1 because of the high costs and huge waste, with half the V5 parts being replaced.
So those wanting to upgrade their V5, would have to do some surgery to the metal case and the main board, but i promise it will be easy-enough and not too dangerous. The good thing is that this conversion will be super cheap, as you will only need to replace 3 parts:
- the RPi, of course
- the thermal block
- the display flat cable
And if your hands are functional and you put some care while doing it, the resulting upgraded unit will be nice and polished
We will share a decent video explaining the recommended procedure ASAP. Stay tuned!
(please, @wyleu , do the honors by sharing some funny video of guys crashing their favorite devices with hammers or something like that )
The best!
Are the Zynthian KIT V5 (last units) already sold out? The [Add to Cart] button is missing. I’m just too slow.
Are you on phone? Check it using a computer, or use the option “See as a computer” on chrome. That made the trick for me.
Update: The button suddenly disappears!
I began to think I had to earn the right (nerd game or something )t o get it in the cart by pressing F5 multiple times and quickly pressing “+”. When it gets to the cart it says…
Your cart is empty!
Warning! Some products became unavailable and your cart has been updated. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.
Hi everyone. Sorry to be a pain, I’m sure you’re getting pestered about this. Is V5.1 likely coming this month or has it been pushed out another bit? Thanks
Hi @Heaving5534 !
The V5.1 will be available very soon. It’s a question of days. Before the end of September for sure. Please, note that V5.1 can’t be released before oram-stable
Regards,
Good news! Thanks for the transparency.
Perhaps some of you would like to check the V5.1 building tutorial:
https://wiki.zynthian.org/index.php/Assembling_Zynthian_Kit_V5.1
It’s almost ready. The process is really similar to the V5, but the RPi5’s display connector position complicates things a little bit. I hope not too much.
The main differences respect to the first V5 building process are located here:
Enjoy!
Love the the new SD-card holder and the sentences about freedom and technology on the case
@jofemodo With the v5.1 kit will you also offer the option to purchase the RPi?
Or should I already order it somewhere else?
Thanks!
Initially we will offer the RPi5 with 4GB or 8GB option. We do this just for completion. We can’t access the reseller price range, so our margin with the RPi5 is almost 0.
Regards,
If you didn’t received the notification, the 5.1 kit is now available
It is pinned right at the top of the forum! Well done @jofemodo. An announcement worthy enough to take a break from my cruise, but not for long…
