Boot from USB fails after latest update

Pi 5 running latest Vangelis

zyncoder: vangelis (fa1198a)

On three different home built Pi5’s that have been running smoothly for several months booting from USB, I have the following behavior. After the last update the system will not boot to USB and the screen says that high current is needed to boot from USB. Current limit is overridden in \boot\firmware\config.txt and, as mentioned, the systems have been booting fine from usb for months. On one of the systems I moved the uSD from the usb stick to the onboard slot and it boots fine from there. Has anyone who boots from USB had this issue after the latest update?

Best regards,

Harry

Hi

Yes i had problems after update today.

My zynthian 5.1 rpi 5 8go did not boot from my Usb drive or SSD drive.
But it booted from uSD.

I succeded to boot again Usb drive or SSD drive after installing bootloader with Usb boot.
After reboot it works, after power off and power on, it does not boot.

I have to resinstall bootloader with Usb boot to boot again my SSD drive…

Help !

Thanks

Hi

Anybody else ?

Hi. please tell us more about how the Pi5’s are powered.

Do you use the official RP power supply with minimum 27W? This is recommended by RP due to Pi5’s peaks in power comsumption.

Do you use another type of USB-C power supply? What ratings does it have? Can it deliver 5V at minimum 5A? If not, it will not power the PI5 sufficiently. Use a Power supply that is recommended by RP.

Is it an official Zynthian 5.x kit (which has a converter and supply circuit inside) or do you power the Pi5’s from a 5V bench supply or via the GPIO or via a non-compliant USB-C supply that supplies fixed 5V at 5A?
In that case, you may need to disable USB-PD negotiation by setting the following in EEPROM via SSH terminal:

sudo -E rpi-eeprom-config --edit

The Pi5’s internal config appears.
Add the following lines or if they are already there, check the values:

[all]
BOOT_UART=0
BOOT_ORDER=0xf164
NET_INSTALL_AT_POWER_ON=0
NET_INSTALL_ENABLED=0
PSU_MAX_CURRENT=5000

Press CTRL-S and CTRL-X to save and exit.
System will reboot. If not, type sync ENTER and reboot ENTER.
Enjoy!

PS: Do not set the PSU_MAX_CURRENT value if you are using an official RP or equivalent power supply, because this setting will disable USB-PD negotiation completely and the power supply may only deliver 5V at reduced current.

Hi

I got 2 power supply : a 9v 4A and a 19v 3.14A from old laptops, cause my official power supply is dead.

But i use that power supply for a long time witout problems, with a Launchkey mini, a Apc Mini and enttec dmx.

It is strange behaviour now, something changed last update ?

this is my boot.conf :

[all]
BOOT_UART=1
BOOT_ORDER=0xf146
NET_INSTALL_AT_POWER_ON=1

Is it wrong ?

Thanks

In my case I m using the official 45W Pi5 supply. Up until the last update I had probably booted the Zynthian 100’s of times without any USB power issue. I update every day - maybe not such a good idea.

Please check on SSH:

rpi-eeprom-update
BOOTLOADER: up to date
   CURRENT: Fri 25 Sep 15:59:09 UTC 2026 (1790351949)
    LATEST: Fri 25 Sep 15:59:09 UTC 2026 (1790351949)

This is the latest bootloader with many fixes.
https://github.com/raspberrypi/rpi-eeprom/blob/master/firmware-2712/release-notes.md
If you have an older one, please update to Vangelis Beta and do all the updates.

It may as well be the system you want to load from USB that kills itself with errors, but this is not to be discussed here. If USB takes too much power to boot, it may as well help if you disconnect what is not necessary and then also connect the USB boot medium to one of the USB2.0 ports (black connector), or use a powered hub.
Some USB sticks and SSDs start to demand more power towards end of life, due to internal mass write retries and garbage collection. Maybe that is why it suddenly thros power issues.

Hi

I got same values of BootLoader.

I tested something else : I got 2 systems : on a usb ssd the latest vangelis that i updated yesterday and on a usb drive i do not update with vangelis system before trixie.

If i repair bootloader with uSD and use the old vangelis system on my Usb drive, all is ok. I can power off and power on. And Power on with SSD.

But if i power off and again the Usb SSD, Zynthian do not load… I have to “reinstall” bootloader with uSD. It is a problem with yesterday update.

It is strange we are 2 people the same day…

Anybody else ?

Also it seems strange the USB boot failed on three different systems the day after the latest update on systems that have been booting from USB reliably for months.

rpi-eeprom-update says BOOTLOADER: up to date though it is one day earlier than the one you show. I tried to force an update with rpi-eeprom-update, it just says EEPROM up to date. I did an EEPROM update from raspi-config and the EEPROM version is still the 24 sep version - which from the release notes is not applicably differedn than the 25 sep version.

AI says:The Ultimate Fix: Hardcode the EEPROM

To completely bypass the power check at the firmware level so that it boots straight from the USB drive without throwing errors or requiring a physical button press, you need to apply the override directly to the EEPROM configurations:

  1. Boot your Raspberry Pi 5 using a working microSD card.

  2. Open the terminal and run the following command to edit the bootloader firmware configuration:

    bash

    sudo rpi-eeprom-config --edit

    Use code with caution.

  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the text file and add this exact parameter:

    text

    PSU_MAX_CURRENT=5000

I’ve reconfigured my 3 Zynthians to boot from on-board SD (PITA) and it will be a while before I can check the AI info out…

Hi

I can not do that edit cause my power supply is 19v

And I write the eprom with uSD each time if power off and when I power on since Sunday

Thanks

Hi @jofemodo

An idea of that problem please ?

Thanks

Sorry, i don’t use SSD nor USB boot in any of my zynthians. Remember all these stuff is experimental and it’s not tested in a regular basis.

For the description of the issues, something could have changed in the EEPROM firmware or the kernel. Have you checked recent kernel updates?

Regards,

USB and SD and SSD boot works here with the latest bootloader.
There seems to be a lack of basic understanding in this issue,

@shieman the 19V supply should be perfectly OK for a Zynthian 5.1. These 19V get downconverted inside the Zynthian and the Pi5 is supplied with 5V.
So the EEPROM setting with PSU_MAX_CURRENT=5000 is applicable, too.

Recent versions of bootloader do check more thoroughly, that is why this setting is important now.

The Zynthian OS seems to have a software workaround to ignore any power supply issues, but if USB boot is selected, then the bootloader EEPROM becomes important. So, if allowing USB boot, one needs to enable thisPSU_MAX_CURRENT=5000 too, if using any other power supply than USB-C with 5V5A capability, otherwise the booted image will either run at lower CPU power, or, if the USB device takes too much current (by descriptor protocol), boot will not work.

Please see RP documentation linked above.

USB booting is not specified for Zynthian.

Any hack towards this direction shall be made only if there is sufficient knowledge of Raspberry Pi
This is all from me in this issue.

Peace!

Hi

It is working now without modification.

I did the edit eprom after in case of…

I could not change the eeprom, after edit and save, the modifications did not appear.
So i use this way :
rpi-eeprom-config > boot.conf
sudo nano boot.conf

[all]
BOOT_UART=1
BOOT_ORDER=0xf41
NET_INSTALL_AT_POWER_ON=1
PSU_MAX_CURRENT=5000
USB_MSD_STARTUP_DELAY=10000
ENABLE_SELF_UPDATE=0

sudo rpi-eeprom-config --apply boot.conf

After reboot, the eeprom is ok.

But it was working without changes today ???

Thanks
