DSP563XX emulation plugins

Please, see my latest post about this:

We need LV2 compliant symbol names for parameters. We can’t progress with parameter integration until this is fixed.

Until then, only MIDI-control is supported, what means you don’t get parameter feedback from the plugin to zynthian UI

Regards.

Thanks @jofemodo :+1: Edit: I will post a request upstream in the related Discord.

[Re-Edit: query posted upstream to the DSP56300 devs (who can obviously read me here as well)]

I just heard from the DSP563XX team, about the current limitations of the emulators in Zynthian, and their potential improvements.

They openly stated that changing the JALV name styling of synth parameters in an LV2 compliant fashion requires a substantial reworking of the code, to the point that it would likely prove necessary to fork a specific branch of the DSP63XX plugins, bespokely customised for Zynthian.
They say that this is a LOT of perspective work, especially in terms of releases maintenance, but also that they haven’t given up on the idea, because they would love it to happen. Apparently, further considerations are underway, to decide whether to fully embark in this endeavour or not.

So, it doesn’t feel like a closed door on the concept, but it neither looks like something that is going to happen soon, unfortunately…

Regards!

I’m sorry if I’m late to the party, but i have a question re. NodalRed on Zynthian. I managed to add it and i can open a VNC to it, even play the default sawtooth wave. But when i try to right-click data sources add folders/add files, no dialogue is popping out.

Is there a certain trick to this?

And another question. I could finally try out Xenia and Vavra.

Xenia is actually quite decent (not very many issues soundwise, but i can feel that the rpi5 struggle a bit).

Vavra is more hungry. I also stumbled across this issue where i changed the GUI scale, i could never return back to the default (whatever i try, i get this super-zoom effect showing huge controllers in the UI). Are there any tricks to effectively reset the UI in VNC?

Hi @ledan!

Good to hear that you have been brave enough as to try and add Nodal Red to the Zynth!

I didn’t even attempt it, going from expert advice on the subject received in the 563 Discord from the devs (apparently, too many DSP cores and modules to emulate, for the shoulders of an Rpi5).

It doesn’t surprise me that you encountered GUI issues on VNC with Nodal, since the current Aarch64 plugin is neither optimised for Z/Oram nor in any way tested or adapted in this scenario.

As for resetting the view magnification of Vavra on VNC, please try (if you already haven’t) the configuration buttons hovering on the left side of the display: there should be general zoom setting.

Good luck, and all best regards

How are you doing Aethermind

brave/crazy, idk… I just wanted the “check” how well (or bad) it worked at this moment. I’m happy to have the hardware next to me also, so its not really a big “disaster” as such. I’m still quite amazed what this tiny computer can manage to do and tbh we have been spoilt by Jofemodi and Riban

rPI6 will come out sooner or later and by then i feel that also Nodal might work rather well (fingers crossed). Here’s to waiting a short while extra :champagne:

Hi @ledan! I am doing fine, thank you :grinning:

I too am the happy owner of a hardware Nord Lead 2X, and have to say that I am almost baffled by how well it holds against time, and the crowded competition grown in the meantime since the early 2000s. You just process it through inexpensive FX outboard, or simply the stock effects plugins of your DAW of choice, and it flourishes in gorgeous deep soundscapes. There is something to its clean and powerful oscillators that defies time and comparison (its technical specs were of top-tier level by the standards of its age).

As for the prospective characteristics of the one-day-coming Pi6, there is already quite a bit of wild speculation in the forums, but it will almost certainly improve on the current A76 Cortex ARM CPU architecture, which objectively is its most serious bottleneck by now.

With a higher computational clock by the order of about 1 GHz, hopefully a couple more physical cores (which would greatly help, in sustaining the most intense calculation burdens), RAM provision up to 32 Gb and native nvme support with a dedicated interface, I guess that the hypothetical Pi6 would be more than capable of managing all the existing and soon to be released DSP563 emulation plugins.

BTW, have you maybe heard of the marvel synth (one of my fave machines ever) which is in the workings now?..

All the best :rainbow:

I tried to alter the left-hand popup menu & tried to change the GUI scale of the plug itself but nothing really helps. I always get this super-zoomed UI no matter what i do. What would be the trick to essentially reset it?

I never heard about the marvel synth  By the name of it, its surely sounds intriguing. I will try to google that thing next :+1:

Hi @ledan

Did you try to set scaling to local or external?

Cheers,
Maarten

Hi maartmaart,

yes i tried all of those options (in fact, every possible combination of option in that menu) but the screen stays super-zoomed regardless of what i do unfortunately.

Hi @ledan, considering that no initiative of sort has been undertaken to make Nodal Red compatible with Raspberry, my guess is that there must be some kind of implicit GUI scaling incompatibility, with Raspian-based systems.

My suggestion is to reinstall the plugin from scratch, in order to override any possible saved GUI setting.

I am afraid that you will hardly find anything on the web, outside the restricted thread of the DSP563 Discord channel. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to comment on the upcoming new emulator, but, if and once released, it will replicate a very coveted early 2000s multi-timbral synth.

As it seems, some substantial CPU power will be required, to run its simulated chain of several DSP chips.

All best regards

Hi there @Aethermind, ah no, the culprit this time is Vavra (who keeps obstruating with its scaled up UI). But i will try your advice and actually remove it and install it again to see if it can go back to its normal “self” again  I wouldn’t quite dare to get my hopes up on the Nodal Red yet (until the rPI6 enters the scene). It was just this experiment to see if at all it could load and somewhat function (and it can, to some degree).

I’m a member of the DSP discord as well and i tried to search for this “Marvel” but all i could see was talks about Trinity vs Triton (the latter i have in the stand) and maybe (?) they are doing the Triton?? which would be quite cool indeed (lol). But it was released in 1999 and so the first ones i think about from early 2000 would be… nord lead 3 or Roland v-synth XT… Its intriguing whatever they plan

Hi! If you make a small base donation (£25 upwards), you are afforded entering the amazing secretive world  of the VIP Chat :crown:.

And that is where the developmental stuff is actively discussed.

(Yes, I meant Vavra of course: lost track of where the conversation was last time ).

Have a nice Saturday evening!

Hi again, yeah i’m already part of the “filthy few” with access to the VIP discussion (but i didn’t really monitor it closely) From the scattered comments that i browsed quickly, i guess the emulation will either come from Germany, Sweden or US on this one. Quite exciting actually

Sorry, looked again and it looks like one of the groundbreaking instruments that formed the early 2000nd
Interesting stuff.

Indeed, let us say… something European but not Swedish, and definitely not orange in the circle

Look closely, and you will understand…

All the best

Read through it. Yay!! Used to have the pro x version of it and it would be sick to have it virtually  fingers crossed. Take care:+1:

Gosh, what a beast! :+1: During my time in England, I came across a MkI with medium polyphony specs on Gumtree, and decided to pass it, since I was set to find a rarer MkII. Still regret it, because it was a real bargain from a very decent and nice seller.

All the best!

It was quite deep indeed and a true “monster” of a VA. Mine started out as a “pro” version until i got in touch with Brian/Sector101 and sent the card over to him to populate it fully (after which it became a 48-voice instrument). I can’t really thank him enough for all crazy/nice things he has provided for the synth-community (Romulator, EX5 flash memory and the list goes on and on).

I did not use the SN-II enough and it is a rather large rack so i sold it (and this i regret to this day honestly).
