When plugin in the Hifiberry dac on the raspi headers, there shouldn’t be any miswiring stuff under the hood.
So once you’ve declared the hardware in /boot/config.txt (“dtoverlay=hifiberry-dacplus” on a stock raspiOS or through webconf if your Pi is running zynthian)

I tried using the same pi with a new Raspberry Pi OS image and got the same result, no i2c connection. I suspect both my pi’s are broken. I will do some more investigation tomorrow…
