Adding battery power to an official V5

Hi all!

I think some of you might be interested in knowing that I have devised with Amazon items a nice battery power combo, which works like a charm with a V 5.1 for full portability.

It features a generous 145 W powerbank with various wattage-amperage draws available, a quality 100 W 5.5x2.5 barrel connector to USB-C adapter, and an USB-C cable with robust 5 A/100 W PD specs.

It sustains easily my V5 operations, even with heavy multitimbral snapshots driven from a tablet computer or from the internal sequencer. My battery life estimate is about 1% or the power brick every 5-6 minutes of Zynthian usage at full CPU, so I guess that, depending on computational load of the loaded processors, this battery setup should afford at least 8 hours of continuous off-grid music making.

I must be missing something, but are you running Zynthian on 5 volts now?

Gosh :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:, running the V 5.1 Zynth on 5V would be notably underpowered, and arguably impossible.

The UGREEN powerbank is capable of delivering through USB-C up to 5A of current at 28V of voltage (140 W: 28 X 5), which is pretty robust for a portable battery.

Could you give an update about duration? How many hours can be running the V5 with this?

I set up and tested this portable battery combo just this morning.

So, my figure estimates are at the moment purely speculative, being a projection of an approximate 5% energy consumption during about half an hour of sustained Zynthian usage, with various chains of synth processors playing sequenced stuff and a Midi keyboard connected.

During the next few days, I could leave the Zynth switched on with the powerbank connected, and see how long it holds.

Well, I understand that the powerbank can deliver this voltage, but normally that is the result of negotiating the power delivery protocol.

The Zynthian barrel connector is passive, so no negotiating.

How do you trick the powerbank in rising the voltage to 28V?

I think the cable adapter do the trick :wink:

I honestly lack the Fernando’s electrical engineering expertise, but I also think that the not exactly cheap USB-C cord and connector ensemble manages to extract the relatively strong wattage and amperage from the powerbank :slight_smile:.
