I like the idea that the emphasis should be on live use.
It would be particularly useful to have a way to somehow record the state changes of all the sequences when playing the pads (synchronized to beats) or setting them step-by-step and to be able to navigate between the recorded states later, e.g. with a foot switch.
This way a particular zynpad performance could be played back (or by defining and triggering song parts like A,B,C,D via foot switch) and used as accompaniment for performances that require both hands constantly (like playing a guitar). This kind of automation (maybe without a separate screen) would give some degree of linearity without the complexity of an arranger. Just an idea, not sure if this makes any sense.
As for the pattern editor, a tracker view would be really handy, since I personally almost never use a piano roll.
