That is the technique I use to choose a sound, but the most flexible mechanism is to combine two differing patches using MIDI clone as this allows you to balance between two sounds to refine the final result.
If you want an electric bass guitar sound you will probably want to use a sample in Linux Sampler, Sfizz or Fluidsynth. There are several bass guitar sounds too choose from.
