Bizarre issues with zynthian V5.1: Hardware or software related?

Don’t worry! It’s perfectly OK to report the issues in the forum thread. Anyway, i also think it’s better to move to a new thread.

You can be sure we will fix your issues in one way or other. If needed, i will send you a mainboard replacement, or whatever part is creating the issues.

More checks … could you check that the 2 white leds in the mainboard remains “on” when it start to fail? Also, could you check the I2C status when it’s failing?

More, please, try looking at the system logs to see if there is some error messages when it’s failing:

journalctl -f -n 200

Finally, just to be sure, could you check the md5sum from the image you are using?

Also worth noting, if I just leave it on, it locks up after a while and I can’t do anything, ssh also freezes.
Is there a log that shows the last things that happened? Like when when they find the captain’s log on a sunken ship?

You could enable persistent logs by editing the /etc/fstab and commenting the tmpfs line for /var/log. Then reboot and the logs will be persistent.
Don’t forget to restore normal behavior when finishing. This line is important for avoiding SD corruption when power button turned off.

BTW, did you make a good work with the thermal pad when installing the thermal block? This is critical with the RPi5.

This is really strange because i’m quite confident that the underlaying libraries work nicely. Having segmentation faults, probably from python interpreter, is something i never saw before.

How many different SD-cards have you tried?

This is really strange too. I never saw this on zynthian. Stack Smashing detection is a protection mechanism created by the compiler for protecting from buffer overflows!! This program (a2jmidid) never did this before!!

Have you enabled these 2 services? Please, disable them for testing.

It really smells like some issue with the SD-card or the RPi5 (overclocking, bad board, etc).
Did you buy your RPi5 from a trusted source?

Could you try inserting the SD-card into the RPi5 directly, without using the extender.
Take care with the extender cable. The union is fragile (we are working to improve it).

Highest I’ve seen is 40 degrees C

Not to brag or anything, but if there was a world championship for cutting the thermal pad accurately I believe I would be crowned king. It’s possible there is a robot that can do it better, but that robot probably has some other very undesirable attributes. I used a surgical scalpel, digital calipers, and my best magnifying headset (really).

I tried 3 different ones, and ran them all in my working pi4 set up too, so I’m pretty confident they are fine.

I haven’t made any changes to the default build, these must be coming from the zynthian code, I’ve left them alone for now as everything seems to be working.

No, I bought it from Amazon (I trust the pizza guy a lot more than Amazon, but they have the best shipping) - my understanding is that there aren’t any counterfeit raspberry pis out there as the chip supply is carefully controlled, but who knows. It certainly does seem like it’s not working up to full potential. I have another one coming tomorrow which I will try out.

I did try this too with no change so have put it back now.

Additionally, I can play sounds and it recognizes my midi controller but it dawned on me last night while tinkering that the lights and buttons are not working nor are any of the encoders.

You control board seems to not be well connected. It was not detected in the first boot, so your kit was not configured. Or perhaps you booted for testing before connecting the control board?

I did test things before I closed up the case, maybe it was not well connected at the time but I do have the ribbon cable installed now. Would that explain why my buttons are not working? In the web UI it shows that there is no connection to the I2c.

EDIT: Ignore Me… I had the ribbon cable upside down…

Mine has been completely stable since turning off overclocking. I played it a lot today, loaded a bunch of samples, restored snapshots, turned pianoteq up to full samples and 64 voices.

It’s been totally rock solid, no strange behavior at all!

I will try another pi5 over the weekend anyway, as I don’t trust this one

That is interesting. We have seen some (I think only one so far) RPi5 that don’t overclock well so maybe you have a similar model. Another possibility is that cooling is less efficient with your installation, e.g. the bonding to CPU or case is suboptimal. I am also aware that some RPI are manufactured under license. (I think the ones sold by CPC/Farnel in the UK are.) So it is plusible that different fabrication plants may result in different physical device behaviour (which may be related to my first point about overclocking).

I’m starting to suspect that the Pi5 doesn’t overclock so nicely as the Pi4. If more cases are confirmed, i will proceed to set default overclock to “None” in the stable image for kit V5.1. Users could try to overclock after booting and testing everything is working OK without overclocking.

BTW, it seems that it’s not a thermal issue. Not in the case i tested at zynthian labs, not in the @nagrom’s case.
