So I measured and silly me! I fiddled endlessly with resinserting the ribbon cables. They made no contact whatsoever on neither side!
So I thought that on the tabs that you open and close there was this slot where you would insert the flat flex cable. At least it looked like that to me. Not only did I not realise that they would not close properly (they did somehow), but I didn’t try to insert the cable under the closing tab where it should go. Also I should have looked more closely at the photographs.
Maybe you want to mention this in your assembly instructions? (I am an engineer and had to deal with all kinds of connectors and thought this one was obvious too)
