Encoders: switch actuation force - something soft and silent?

I am not really happy with the operation (actuation) force I have to apply on my rotary encoders’ switches. Neither of the relatively loud click resonating through the plastic case of my device.

I use the ubiquitous KY-040 encoder modules and according to my measurement the force is between 500 and 600g. I wonder if the encoders used in official Zynthian or some of your own DIY versions are better. I had a look around the internet and the force is seldom specified - and even if it is, the values are ranges as wide as 300-900g! 500 seems to be a common value and 300 (or 3N) a minimum.

The most popular encoder with switch is the Bourn PC11 series:

In the specs you can read:

Switch Actuation Force: 610 ± 306 gf

Don’t expect to find something very different to this at a reasonable price.

An alternative is removing the switch and implement “knob-touch” using the metal knob+shaft as a capacitive sensor. I made some tests using the MTCH108 and it works quite well. Of course, it has pros and cons and it would require modification in the zyncoder library, but it’s a interesting path to explore.

Touch is a handy addition to knobs but I think the switch would remain beneficial, especially in custom builds without the extra 20 buttons.

I’m not going to remove the switches
