I am trying to use HDMI audio (and yes, I know about it being poor quality/high latency/etc - and I have a DAC hat - but at the same time I have a 7" touchscreen that includes speakers and it would be nice as an option to have a self-contained sound-producing box in some cases). I’m assuming that it should work when setting audio to “Rbpi-Hdmi” but that just results in a big red ERROR and restart loop. Is there a way to make this work? Thanks!

It’s a long time i’ve not tested this option. Could you tell us the details about your setup?
SD-image version, etc. A snapshot from the webconf dashboard would be a good starting point.
Also, could you test with the analog RBPi audio output (minijack)? just to compare

Build date is 2023-06-03. The headphone jack works fine. Right now this is a minimal setup; just the 7" touchscreen (I have removed the audio hat for now).
More on my setup but none of this seems relevant to HDMI: I’ve tested MIDI with USB controllers and that works fine (I did also try get an old Creative Labs USB-MIDI adapter to work but had no luck with that, so have a MIDI hat coming too. Plan to put this in a box with some buttons and rotary encoders (which I am thinking I can just attach to GPIO pins that may still be free). I’m basically trying to mostly recreate a v4 that I used to have, as the v5 looks great but too much $$$. Not sure yet what the solution is for audio in, which would be fun to have for guitar, but that’s low priority.

Doing that doesn’t stop the reboot loop. However, you may be on to something. Following your first link, I get nowhere. Following the second one and running raspi-config interactively, HDMI doesn’t show up as an option in the sound settings. Weird. Maybe there’s a boot time flag or kernel driver missing.

they are some exotic hardware too !
What’s your HDMI display exactly is ?
Is the HDMI output seen by system ? list them with:
aplay -l
Hardware messages from
dmesg
command are helpfull too
These seems the relevant lines in the error log:
It seems your system doesn’t have the HDMI interface “b1” or the name is not “b1”, what it should be.
Please, as @le51 asked above, send us the output of this command:
aplay -l

Ups!! I just noted that when enabling HDMI with the kernel vc4 driver (current HDMI configuration does this), the HDMI soundcard changes its name to:
vc4hdmi0
or
vc4hdmi1
depending the HDMI interface.
So you should modify your jackd options like this:
-P 70 -t 2000 -s -d alsa -d hdmi:vc4hdmi0 -r 48000 -o 2 -p 512 -n 2 -X raw
Note the “hdmi” replacing the “hw”.
Please,test and confirm it works for you. Then, I will fix the zynthian HDMI configuration.
Please, note that probably you need your HDMI display connected for this to work.

I swear I replied to this yesterday but it went into the ether. I can confirm that that does match what I see as the name for the HDMI port, and I am connected to port 0. But the reboots remain:

Odd! Did you save in webconf and reboot Zynthian?
The other thing that is weird is that every time it starts up it shows the “Zynthian needs to reboot” message at the bottom. Which makes me think that those options aren’t taking for some reason.
When zynthian-ui is not running, reboot could fail. Better to unplug+plug to be sure.

Power cycling gets rid of the reboot prompt but otherwise doesn’t change anything.
Try to delete the Mixer Controls. HDMI sound driver doesn’t have any.
