Headless Dexed

Hi everyone
first of all, thanks for your work on this great project!

I am a big fan of FM Synthesis and particularly interested in the Dexed function of Zynthian. My idea is to build a very lightweight version of it, basically a standalone Dexed device without touchscreen etc. that simply plays preconfigured Dexed presets.

I have the following components around and would like to use them if possible.

-First generation Raspberry Pi B
-USB Midi Keyboard (AKAI MPK Mini)
-MIDI jack and optocoupler for building an optional MIDI-in

Basically what I have in mind is connecting the keyboard to the Pi and be able to play one of the 32 Dexed Presets (which I’d create on the PC version of Dexed), without connecting any further gear, switch or knob. By sending MIDI CC with the AKAI I’d like to change between the presets. At the same time, the device should accept DIN-Midi-In. An easy way to update the Dexed presets (via Midi/Sysex?) would be a plus.

So, would this be possible? Is the “old” Pi enough for using Zynthian/Dexed?

Thanks for your help and keep up the great work!

Dexed is already in the zynthian package.
But we only have images for the Pi2 and Pi3.
You were talking about the first version?
I would invest the 35EUR for a Pi3.
A Pi2 is more expensive where I live right now anyways

You need a decent sound card though.
And you can hook up a HDMI display.

I wouldn’t take your MIDI board, but buy the simple zynthian kit.
You can get a plastic box for less than 10EUR and change it so that all components fit.

And actually the display isn’t that expensive either.

Maybe Dexed can run on a RPi1, but booting will be very slow. I think this will not make much fun… only for a really special use case.

But give it a try
