Headphone Panning Issue On 5.1 Zynthian

Brand new Zynthian owner here,

I’m getting too much left channel volume on a newly assembled 5.1 Kit with my own Raspberry Pi 5. Experimentally adjusting the balance to 50% right “corrects” the issue.

I’ve tried now on 3 different pairs of headphones and 2 different SD cards with new flashes. Everything else seems to be working; mono outputs 1 & 2 seem to be behaving correctly.

When I took a look at the traces around the headphone channel it looks like C37 might be missing a capacitor and C36 looks off center. I didn’t have any assembly problems and didn’t impact the board so I doubt I knocked this off. Possibly shipping damage?

I’m brand new to Zynthian so I’m looking for what could cause this issue and then how to resolve it. It could really could be anything, this is just my best guess.

Thank you!

Hi @trrichard !

Good analysis! It seems you got a faulty main board. The C36 is of-center, but probably is working OK and not causing issues. In the other hand, the missing C37 seems to be the cause of the excessive level in the left channel.

We have 2 options:

  1. We send a main board replacement with no charge for you. If you return the faulty main board, we could fix it easily and use it for our lab.

  2. You are brave enough to fix it. In such a case i could offer a partial refund for the cost of the main board. I could send you the right capacitors for free.

Up to you!
Sorry for the inconveniences.

Let’s do a new board. I’ve never been good at surface mount components.

Thank you for your support!
