Layer: possible to change engine if layer type stays the same?

Would it be possible (codewise) to allow an e.g. exisiting synth layer to allow changing to a different synth engine of same type? Like swapping dexed with obxd? so that the other settings of a layer, like midi, transpose, etc. would stay the same and one doesnt need to completely remove an existing, add a new one and set all of that again?

This is a limitation of current implementation that should be solved ASAP.
