Midi/Audio error. Reason detected. Nothing helped so far [Solved-Updated Build Instructions]

On bootup the screen is upside down and the Midi/Audio error shows up. Checked the first_boot.log and it is clear that the control board is not detected. Checked i2cdetect as well and the MCP address did not show up. So the cause is clear: Control board not detected.

Checked and reconnected the control cable four times now without success. What else can I do?

Oh man, figured it out the fifth time reconnecting. Unfamiliar with the FPC connectors I followed the instructions and pictures on the official build guide for V5.1. I read the notes to connect the cable with metal contacts facing down. Did that correctly four times but followed the pictures where the cable is inserted above the tongue. After the first post I scrolled through more messages here and stumbled on which stated that he made the same error. Unlike in the pictures the cable must be inserted beneath the tongue. Done this and bingo everything seems to be fine now. Control board detected and Zynthian is booting as expected.

It might be worth to ad a note to the official build guide for this point. Not only putting contacts face down but put the cable underneath the tongue, not as shown in the pictures, above.

Hi @harold !

Welcome to zynthianland!

And thanks a lot for reporting your issues.

I’ve added the note on each blue warning box in the building tutorial, like this:

WARNING!!
If your main board is labeled as v.0.9. we have added a round blue sticker on it. In this version, the control-1 FPC connector has bottom contacts and you must insert the ribbon cable with the metal contacts side FACING DOWN. Be aware that the cable goes underneath the tongue, instead of over the tongue like shown in the pictures.

I hope this avoid other users have similar issues.

Now, please, enjoy your zynthian and send some musical feedback if you like

All the best,

Hello Jofemodo,

thank you. This is what I like on community and open source work.
Helping to bring the thing along. BTW I am mostly an analogous hardware
guy. You can see what I am doing at https://www.haraldswerk.de/. But I
needed the help from the forum from another mail. Interestingly the
other was an engineer and he needed a few accounts as well to figure it out.

Have a good time

Harald
