My newly built 5.1 (pi5) starts up in Linux, not Zynthian, so what do I have to do?

The software guide refers to three possible initial outcomes, general success, blank screen and an error message. I guess starting up in Linux is a fourth, because it’s none of those. I have no idea where I went wrong or how to find out apart form asking here. : )

Hi lopass, are you referring to purchase of an official kit and trying to follow official kit instructions? It sounds from your description that you need to reflash the SD.

Thanks LFO, I figured that may be the next step, but might wait for other comments first. Yes, official kit and instructions. Seems odd that I can’t find a precedent for my scenario.

SD Card issues (including the brand and size of the card) are probably the source of most initial problems after building Zynthian, but there are other reasons why your Z may be giving up and leaving you in Linux, mostly with connecting the screen or Control Board.

You can login (I think as root, with pwd opensynth) if you have been left at a login prompt and then use journalctl to look for where z failed during start.

You can try using the SD Card socket on the RPi without the extender cable to main board to see if that’s the right area.

And sometimes you can actually see the error message go by on the screen during start.

What brand and size of SD Card are you using? Sandisk and Samsung, 32 or 64GB are recommended, though that’s really far too vague.

If you can get into webconf you can use it to look at logs and configuration.

If you can make a video of the screen from power up to failure that might provide a clue.

And may the Force be with you.

A warm welcome @lopass.

How did you flash the image to the uSD card?
