With the disturbingly close release of oram, it’s probably a good idea to tidy up the rather deep and dank dungeons where we keep stuff…
So to unclutter other threads and reduce the number of rook & crow collisions such chaos produces we have opened a whole new wing in the department reserved for ‘gently persuading’ lost zynthian souls to perform their penances. . .
some vulcanic soundscape. Using zynthian mainly as audio processing and fx for eurorack, and from now on, another zynthian as a recording box. Someone said, always record …
And hence, this is the result … it’s not always like this
Congratulations ! It’ fantastic to see how you’ve got all the kit into such a tight rig. Excelent build up and the melodlia solo was a lovely audio contrast to the loop by allowing physical vibration into the equation!
As a reward you are excused the soup course on tonight’s menu.
I actually have migrated off this setup and am now using an “official” 5.1 kit, future vids will show my new homegrown board…
I spent a lot of time with sooperlooper but there are some things it won’t do that the boss 500 will. The main thing is it doesn’t seem to support the verse/chorus or sequential setup that the boss pedals have. The use case is:
loops are set to play to loop end (or continue to cycle)
while workikng in loop 1, I can click STOP, and switch to loop 2 and click RECORD
loop 2 is now in standby mode, loop 1 will complete playing and then seamlessly switch to loop 2 and begin recording
My research and personal attempts tells me this is not possible with sooperlooper.
Also, I mostly do pretty long loops and need to see where I am in the playback, and am usually changing instruments a lot. There’s ways to do that on the zynthian, but I want to see both where I am and the mixer view at the same time. So, hardware looper makes the most sense.
I’ve been adding more instruments into my solo performances too, and my basic signal flow is now everything into a small mixer, and then sending a submix to the looper and then back to the mixer to send to the house PA.
The zynthian remains the main sound generator though!
Thanks for the description of your workflow. It is interesting to see what challenges users have and how the resolve them. Zynthian can do (almost) everything but that doesn’t necessarily provide optimal workflows. Your examples here clearly demonstrate what limitations there can be with everthing in one box but also offer seeds for ideas on how such workflows may be acheivable.
Thanks, @riban, I also fully appreciate that in general I have a weird workflow that certainly isn’t for everyone. I could simply sequence a lot of what I’m looping, but I don’t want to lose the organic nature of playing everything live and having it be different every time, and I like that when I finish a song and erase the loops they’re gone forever.
I also find it a little easier on the brain when performing to have some tasks broken out into separate devices. I’m not sure why really, maybe I’m just old.
