Pi5, Pianoteq at full rate?

So I’ve got a stripped down Pi5 Zynthian hooked into my Boss GP-10 and it will be my Pianoteq engine primarily, but it gets all six strings of the guitar in there too, so might be some interesting experiments to be done. Might build a v4-style case for it with stomp switches.

Question being, how much resource headroom does the Pi5 leave after you go full rate Pianoteq? Specifically thinking about layering things on top of the piano itself only - I still have my Pi4 V5 device that will be present anywhere this is.

That to me implies that there should-might be some extra CPU ‘left over’, and if I dare to quantify something so vague, maybe a third of the CPU(s) is available. Maybe not if you hold down all 88 keys!

I was even thinking about knocking down the voices to 16 or maybe 24, if that helps. I am not…. Rachmaninov. :sweat_smile:

Remember that sustain will be truncated. This can have a significant effect, even with chopsticks!

Hi @jtode! Since we all have learned how affordable and engaging is, to build ourselves a whole bank of slightly different custom Zynths, I would suggest to leave a single Pi5-based device just for running PianoTeq at maxed-out settings, irrespective of the technical prowess of the performer and complexity of the music. :wink:

With a multi-output midi box, or addressing differently named Zynthians in gadget mode through USB, it is straightforward to construct complex multitimbral or layered layouts, in a way which also affords recycling spare Raspberries of older generations, for playing some of the less CPU-demanding synthesiser channels.
