Recommended Zynthian version

Even though I’m a long time Zynthian user, at the moment I’m confused as to the state of the different versions.

  • Oram - stable version, but apparently not getting any updates since all development is on Vangelis.
  • Vangelis - still in development?
  • And then there’s ‘Vangelis Zynbleton’ (Zynbleton Vangelis - READ ME) which I still can’t figure out if it’s a separate version or simply alluring to the fact that with the latest features Zynthian is approaching Ableton [Live I’m a assuming] in terms of sequencing capabilities.

There is long thread on Vangelis (Zynbleton Vangelis - READ ME) but it seems more of a progress report on the new features.

The Wiki (Zynthian Users Guide - ZynthianWiki) seems to be fairly recently updated, but doesn’t really offer help as to what version to choose or what the real difference is.

I think it would be beneficial to all if there was a fairly short and concise thread [this one perhaps?] highlighting the current state, without going into a lot of detail in the thread itself.

(I’ve stayed away from Vangelis, partly because of its development status, and partly because I view the Zynthian mainly as a multi timbral module, having my sequencing needs fulfilled elsewhere. I’d love to give it a twirl once things have settled down though.)

Hi @ricard!

Zynbleton was a development branch but it’s already merged in vangelis.

We only have 2 versions:

  • Oram (stable)
  • Vangelis (development but landing to reach full stability)

Our focus is in stabilizing Vangelis: polishing workflows, fixing bugs, documenting and releasing as the new stable ASAP. For sure, some new feature can be added before the release, but we don’t have plans for big developments.

Vangelis is quite stable currently, so it could be a good moment to have a taste. If you wait a few days, you could try the “Vangelis preview” image i’m working on. It’s not a BETA yet, but it would be close.

The best,
