@riban, I just tried it. The Seaboard is visible, and aftertouch and slide work. The other controls probably need to be set for each CC. The keyboard responds very well, unlike when I connected the EWI, which was impossible to play.
Nice work! I used to have two of these but zynthian mpe support was still in It’s infancy and rpi3b+ was not powerful enough to do much with.
As a linux user I was annoyed at having to use a specific app on windows to change the keyboard settings so I made this:
This basically allows config changes on the keyboard without any extra apps or interfaces.
The code is problably outdated and I don’t have the roli anymore to keep it updated, but it might be interesting to look at
I have been using Zynthian with Roli Seaboard Rise 2 now for a while. It’s a wonderful combination when using Surge XT. Most presets have clear MPE support, not just those in the MPE category. I just haven’t quite figured out a good way add more than one chain to the configuration so that I can then switch easily between the chains.
Nice use of the slide and glide there in the first video clip. The second clip (the one with Zynthian) is silent though.
Unfortunately, I’m not Linux expert enough to try making changes like this… Zynthian (which I love) is very complicated to use… too many submenus, but that’s my limitation. Also, I have poor vision and a small display. On my Mac, I work with two displays and have everything in front of me, which makes it much easier.
The Roli Seaboard is a huge disappointment. I thought I was having trouble fingering it, but I’ve been trying it for days and I’m not getting results even close to what I get on a “normal” keyboard. I’ve seen videos of it being used with SWAM instruments and I hear wonderful things, while I get crap. The instruments don’t react and the dynamics are random. It’s most likely just me, but I don’t think I’m that bad. If anyone has this instrument, can they give me the right settings to use it with SWAM? I bought this controller to use mainly with SWAM winds and strings… I’m very disappointed.
In the videos the “keys” are touched delicately, while I almost have to press them to get some volume and hear real dynamics…
Disclaimer: I neither have SWAM nor any MPE controller, so it’s just guessing:
I think the behaviour you describe might be related to how dynamics are created from classic MIDI controllers vs MPE controllers. So normally you have note on velocity plus arbitrary other controls while controlling the stringed swam instruments with MPE may rely on press input to control dynamics while ignoring the note-on velocity.
Have you tried the templates this guy here suggests?
Also, I don’t know if by default the “bow pressure” is mapped to that aftertouch parameter like this guy suggests.
I really hope it’s something like this and that your controller just doesn’t have wear…
I am not experiencing those issues with Seaboard Rise 2. Not sure if they are essentially the same, but they do seem similar. Then again I have never tried SWAM; just Equator 2, Pigments, and now Surge XT on Zynthian.
Thanks @hannesmenzel, I was watching this video 5 minutes before you pointed it out, and it solved 80% of my problems. Everything works much better now… but it’s so hard to find information. Thanks everyone.
From my thirty years of experience with musical instruments I can guarantee you that the person who sold me this controller has used it 3 times in total.
A question for Seaboard owners… I’m trying to record a bowed double bass on Studio One 7. The Seaboard responds much better thanks to your advice, but when I listen back to the part, it doesn’t sound right. I noticed that there are two notes at the beginning of each note. In the photo below, I show the extra notes that were originally superimposed on the beginning of the “real” note (to show it, I moved the “real” notes forward). Has anyone had this problem? Thanks.
