I’m sure I’ll hurt myself a lot with this peripheral… I’m too traditionalist… but using a lot of synth sounds and having found it at a great price, I couldn’t resist and I’m curious to try it with the SWAM wind instruments and then, obviously, I’ll try connecting it to the Zynthian.
I see I’m not the only one who wakes up early in the morning… Unfortunately, @Aethermind, the first impression was not so wonderful… I have to adjust this controller so as not to have to “hit” my fingers hard on the rubber to get a minimum volume… Probably the previous user used a hammer to play .
It’s teaching duties that call for such uncomfortable wake up times .
As I maybe have written elsewhere before, I have not been particularly attracted to these multidimensional controllers until now. I never tried any of them, so my argument is completely speculative, but I am not sure that I would find a real-world application of them (beyond their objective technological interest), for my style of playing and the kind of compositions I write.
From my standpoint, it remains to be ascertained if I could concoct out of a Roli a convincing four-to-six part concertato, similar to a choral, quartet, brass ensemble or orchestral writing, regardless of using or not synthesiser sounds.
My impression is that controlling reliably individual tuning and timbre of voices on a rubber surface, in any kind of polyphonic playing with two hands, might prove to be challenging, requiring a lot of training and a specific instrumental technique to develop.
At least for my use case, a sophisticated and expensive MIDI controller just for throwing expressive solos would be overkill, and a dubious allocation of resources.
This is true of any instrument. I can play many instruments poorly, and few instruments well. There isn’t enough time in our short lives to learn everything we want to the level we want… but that shouldn’t stop our aspirations. Now where did I put that zeusaphone?
I am ruminating about buying a Linnstrument for years now (for financial reasons) and was hold back after “investing” in one of these Aodyo Loom. But as a former “stringed-instruments-only-guy” I am still tempted about these guitar fretboard shaped MPE controllers.
So, I am very curious how you get along with zynthian and MPE.
@Aethermind@riban Unfortunately, I have a strong desire to experiment, which is why I’m a radio amateur, and why (unfortunately) I tried many instruments before returning to black and white keys (“Pianists are too poor to have keys of the same color…” Lanfranco docet). This Roli has enormous potential, but it revolutionizes the way you use a keyboard… then I think of those who play with those square pads that seem randomly placed to me… I’ll never become a virtuoso and a harmony expert, but at least I want to try and experiment, and believe me, buying this instrument cost me a lot of anxiety.
As soon as I can get it to work as I want on my MacMini, I’ll be sure to try it with the Zinthian… but I wonder if it will be possible to install the drivers…
Wow, that would be a bummer, I haven’t thought about an MPE controller would be just an expensive brick on linux systems without the driver software (Dashboard?).
True @riban: life is short and demanding, jobs are generally tough, and time by definition is limited. So, it’s always a matter of finding the right balance and focusing on a few subjects, between the many directions a perceptive mind would like to pursue.
Speaking of which, I have refrained myself too many years now, from learning natural trombone and forming a Renaissance brass consort. Maybe because it could trigger the end of my relationship, for first-degree acoustic mobbing (even more than my crowded population of synths)
Let’s just say that for now I’m satisfied with the fact that I have a like-new instrument for a quarter of its price… I don’t consider this controller ESSENTIAL. However, it is an excellent source of sonic inspiration. The fingering changes are very noticeable, but the sounds are really beautiful for me, as I try to compose music for documentaries. For now, I wouldn’t buy a Rise 2 even if I had the money. But it’s a great experience.
Here’s a little demo of one of my songs. It’s nothing you can’t do with a regular keyboard, but the Roli makes it easier…The recording was made with the phone, so…
Exactly, without MPE, the Seaboard is like a normal keyboard and even uncomfortable. I tried using it with a SWAM cello, and if it’s not set to MPE, it’s unplayable.
