RPi 4B with zynthian does not recognize USB devices [Solved using latest image]

Hello to all,

first of all: Thank you for all the work you have already done. Zynthian is a great project and fulfills the open source ideas.

I am new to the forum and found the following problems:

I downloaded the latest version, put it on an SD-card and ist didn’t find any USB-device.
The only thing which was shown, was the internal USB hub:

root@zynthian:~# cat /sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices

T: Bus=01 Lev=00 Prnt=00 Port=00 Cnt=00 Dev#= 1 Spd=480 MxCh= 1

On a fresh raspian it normaly looks like this:

I tried this several times with different cards and different RPi’s, the result was the same every time.

Nevertheless i tried the older version 2020-09-05 RC3 (which i tried in the last year and al work fine). This older version was running correctly.

Therefore i am wondering, what errors i made.

I tried the following:

Installing 2020-09-05 and than
apt update && apt-upgrade and voilà: the error occured.

After that i tried update the kernel, i found a 4.19 running and typed in:

apt install --reinstall raspberrypi-kernel
reboot

After that the RPi4 booted correctly and all usb devices are back.

As you can see: Unfortunatly i have no original Zynthian running, i am using it
in a test environment with no RPi display and an external USB-Sound device.

What did not check: Which kernel is in the 2021-05-24 release.

Could it be a problem with an old kernel ?

Here are some more informations about the running system:

Are you using the last stable image? Please, use this image:

https://os.zynthian.org/zynthianos-last-stable.zip

Regards,

As far as I know using apt upgrade is a surefire way to brick the zynthian installation.
Only use the upgrade offered from the admin menu or the one in the web gui

Another variable is the raspi power supply. If you can’t get enough power through to your ports, the usb devices may not behave as you’d expect.

Please excuse my inaccuracy.
Yes, i used exactly this image which is dated on 2021-05-24 04:03 .

To be sure, i do this test again and will show the results here.

Best regards

Thanks for your hint. My power supply has 5.1V and 3.0 A, this should be enough.

It is strongly recommended to use the official Raspberry Pi Foundation power supply. Many third party ones have been found to be unreliable with drifting voltages and varying power outputs which upset the Raspberry Pi.

Thank for your hint, but this is an original RPi power supply.

Hello to all!
@jofemodo
The first image, which i used, was this: 2021-05-24-zynthianos-stable-2104.zip. Meanwhile i found this under “Test”.
I don’t know if i am wrong, but in the last two week this was linked to “latest”.
Now the latest image is 2021-05-18-zynthianos-stable-2104.zip. I downloaded it and i worked
I don’t know, which error i made, but now it works.

This brings me to an additional question:
Does “apt upgrade” break the the system?

Thanks for your very fast support!

Greets Karl T.

Yes. For the time being.
