Should Zynthian be showing up in ALSAmixer?

One quick note and a related question.

I just updated to Ubuntu Studio 26.04 LTS last week. It seems that it is mostly good, but it has brought some wonkiness and instability in certain areas. Among them, when I power cycle the Zynthian, I now get a full-on Pipewire crash. I was rather surprised by this, because it never happened to me on any earlier version, and although it is connected by USB to my PC, it mostly is used through my mixer, so I don’t think of it as being something that would disrupt Pipewire in that way.

So, if anyone is considering updating to Ubuntu Studio 26.04 or anything else that new (Ai answers suggest that perhaps this is a Kernel 7.0 issue, but I am not clear on that, just be aware of this consideration.

Also, what does Zynthian expose via USB? Is it just MIDI? If I already have it connected by ethernet for config, patch cables to my mixer, and MIDI DIN cables to my audio interface, is it arguably undesirable to have it connected by USB at all? In an ideal world, I’d still love to get the Zynthian sending digital audio straight to my PC, instead of going to analog and back, but I don’t believe that is presently a capability. Please correct me if there is more than just MIDI that happens over the USB connection. Thank you.

Just MIDI. No audio output by USB at the moment.

The USB Type-B implements MIDI only. It is different to USB Type-A MIDI because one is the host and one is the device. We too would love to get USB audio over the Type-B connector but it is very challenging and not a priority. Don’t hold your breath.
