Stuck at 'ERROR' screen: 'Error connecting with Jack server' ['no hardware' option, running on RPi 5 model B]

Hi, I’m really interested in buying a Zynthian box, but thought I might try and have a play first by installing it on a RPi5 I already have. This has a HiFiBerry DAC+ Standard fitted.

Unfortunately, when I boot the PI it stops at a Zynthian splash screen that says ‘ERROR’ in red. However, I can access the config via my web browser, and looking at the UI log suggests that something has gone awry…

Any suggestions as to how I can fix this please?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi @riderless_horse! A warm welcome to where we wander without worries and warm our hearts with (w)rhythm.

It is most likely that you need to configure your zynthian to recognise the attached hardware. The image (which I assume you have downloaded Oram 10-02) tries to auto configure but can’t detect all permutations of custom builds. Your log cuts in after the relevant jack errors but I suspect you need to use webconf to select a suitable sound card. The display error should offer some hint, e.g. “ERROR: Audio”. To start up, zynthian needs a working sound subsystem so you need to configure sound. It also needs a suitable wiring config for the attached hardware encoder which can be “Dummies” for none. And it requires a config for display which it sounds like you already have working.

I was wondering when we would wecognise what was going on…

Thanks for the welcome and the tip… I went back to the soundcard selection: the paperwork with it describes it as ‘HiFiBerry DAC+ Standard’, so I selected ‘HiFiBerry DAC+’ from the Zynthian menu initially. After reading your post I went back and tried ‘HiFiBerry DAC+ Lite’, and it’s now booted successfully!

Time to go and read the guides and have a play!

Thanks again.

I’ll certainly give it a go once I’ve figured out what I’m doing!
