Studiologic SL88 Midi multiple midi channels

Hello I’m using zynthian a while but not verry in depth.
Now with the V5 is next level for a beginner.

I have a sl88 midi keyboard.
It is possible to define 4 different midi channels in the display. Can I configure zynthian( I use it headless ) that for every different midi channel a other instrument is enabled.

Example :
Midi channel 1 piano
Midi channel 2 organ
Midi channel 3 a bass drum
Midi channel 4 a sax

Now when i configure the different channels on the keyboard the zynthian I have channel 1 a synthesizer it always plays on al channels what the keyboard is configured.

Thanx a lot !

Regards Jan-Willem

In v5 you have to enable multi mode for it to behave like that:
https://wiki.zynthian.org/index.php/Zynthian_UI_User_Guide_-_V5
See section 2.2 on MIDI

To enable it go to admin > midi input devices and then long press the input you want to change to multi timbral.

I just got an SL73 and considered doing it this way, but have gone back to using zs3 to change from sound to sound, mainly because on the sl73 I found I have to mute the instrument I’m currently playing, and then unmute the next one, which is a lot of clicks and knob turns. With a zs3 I can just hit a button on another controller and be where I want.

I can not find the midi input settings

You are on the wrong screen. Every chain in mixer has its own midi in settings. It is not global that would be on admin screen that you shared. Select a chain in mixer and then click on its menu (long press encoder 4). There you will find midi in option.

This is the current stable. Please, consider changing to Oram.

I also could not find the Midi setup first, but with trial and error I did this steps:

  • select Mix of your Chain (with arrow right /left and yes or with knob4)
  • then the settings are shown:
  • now press OPT
  • now got to “Midi In” and press YES:
  • now the fun part comes that you would never guess ;-), when you are there at “-> DIN-5-Midi” you need to press first YES and also the knob4:

  • Out of nothing there is this page
When you select this Multitimbral mode, you can bind an instrument to the corresponding midi channel you have selected. I am wondering for what this selection is for the other modes. Probably I just have to read the manual, but I also got my Zynthian yesterday. I am really happy it works now  .

I have the same use-case with a Digitakt OG and using its Midi trigs.

(I am using the 5.1kit with the latest stable ORAM image)

Thanks for sharing. I also struggled and couldn’t find the multitimbral mode in new Oram.

There are fewer steps than described above:

  • Access admin menu
  • Select MIDI Input Devices
  • Bold SELECT / bold touch on a MIDI input device
  • Toggle Multitimbral mode

You can also do the same from the mixer view if you have at least one MIDI / Syth chain:

  • Bold SELECT / bold touch bottom strip of a MIDI / Synth chain
  • Select “MIDI In” menu option
  • Bold SELECT / bold touch on MIDI input device
  • Toggle Multitimbral mode

i.e. you don’t have to access the parameter control view to access chain options menu (although you can for convenience).
