The makers of TAL-U-NO-LX recently released a clone of the Roland JX-8P: TAL-J8X
This one also is commercial software. Would it be useful to talk to TAL and ask if demo version could be included in Zynthian?

I’m wondering - would it be worth trying to contact Martin Luders to see if he would be willing to provide an artefact of PG-8x 2.0 that could be run on Zynthian?
This plugin is really spot on the original hardware.
Maybe some miniscule hope here. Our gentleman Mr Lüders got back to me today. He is looking into the JUCE framework, primarily for VST, etc for the PG-8x. To my understanding, lv2 is something that is not primarily in scope, but my fingers are still crossed for it to happen 
(if he manages, then I’m quite sure that the best ever JX8P emulator will be available on this platform)

I don’t see a binary for arm64.
I’ll ask him about it.
PG-8X used to be a strong favourite of mine among free VSTs: rich sound, modern character, gorgeous pads, really shines with a bit of FX. I used it massively about a decade ago, for a big compositional project developed in England.
This baby is easily on par, albeit with a sonic twist on its own, with the remarkable Roland’s own re-installment of the tiny lovely JX-08 boutique synth.
Alas, I never ever spotted any signs of an ARM 64 build…
Just now i believe i just became the official beta-tester for ARM64 for Mr Lueders Of course, i will try to do so to be best of my abilities and with some bit of luck, perhaps the absolutely best 8p emulation will be with our favourite distribution soon

Honestly, I am not sure that PG-8X is the “best emulation” of JX-8P strictly speaking, but certainly it sounds very nicely and it has a deep sonic character to it.
Let me say that, fortunately outside this forum, there are people who believe in their entitlement to patronise anyone else about their plugin preferences, on the basis of millimetrical hardware-level details which anything but a multimeter would be able to detect.
Thus, irrespective of its one-to-one audio behaviour loyalty to the modelled instrument, I think that PG-8X is an excellent synth recreation.

i really do respect your opinion naturally. I haven’t heard “all” the 8p emulations out there of course
But for me, having the O.G next beside me (the version without printed patch-names on the membrane buttons - i know there are at least 3 generations of the JX8P with different DACs in them (Sharp, etc) and i think i have one of the later ones here) it is close to impossible to tell the original apart from the PG8x sonically.
Of course, i can’t say that anything else like the TAL version is worse - because i don’t own a license for that one (but i do for their J60, etc and i know they are very accurate). What i can say is that for a free emulation/vst of the JX8P, this one is at the absolute top for sure.

I unreservedly concur, and, as said before, PG-8X has been a long-time synth friend of mine, even without ever enjoying your own physical possession of the fantastic original instrument (strong Rolandian here).
The fact that thanks to your personal involvement PG-8X is about to come to Zynthianland is totally exciting news!
