Total Beginner seeking advice, please - red ERROR splash screen

Hi everyone. Firstly I am not building a kit so appreciate I’m seeking help with open-source software that I use thanks to the kindness of the dev team etc. but would at least like to try to use the software with a view to building a kit further down the line… I primarily found Zynthian via a search for a way to turn a RPi into a USB midi host but am intrigued by what it is…
I am using a Pi 3B+, clone of a PiTFT Plus 2.8 and a Steinberg UR12 configured as Generic USB Device.
Webconf is UP, the screen shows a Zynthian graphic, at the top is IP address and ‘Audio/Midi’ and below the image is a red ERROR.
Is it possible to make any suggestions as to what the error is, please? Thanks!

Hi @jimunderground!

Be welcome to this lively bunch .

I recommend you access the Zynthian via webconf from an external computer (which should be doable even when the error screen appears), and under hardware > audio select Dummy amongst the available devices.

This should allow you to complete the Zynthian startup routine. Afterwards, you have to select from the list in the same webconf tab the driver for your specific hardware, or try and use/edit the available driver for a similar audio card of the same brand.

All best regards

Also, once booted Zynthian successfully (on Oram Stable I guess), if you want to use instead the Generic USB Device driver, which tends to work most of the times, check in the driver configuration options (select Advanced View) that the set sampling frequency, bit resolution (I am not sure anyway that there is a driver option for it) and buffer size are supported by your audio interface.

@Aethermind thank you! That appears to be successful as I now have a ‘Last State’ screen and a Main/Main matrix at the bottom left. Touch screen desperately needs calibration though. I will follow your advice on sample rate, etc. and try to configure tha audio I/O next

Very well then :grinning:
Enjoy your new amazing IT environment for music production, courtesy of our brave and generous in-house developers!

(and yes, touchscreen needs calibration most of the times - just a reminder: be sure to activate touch navigation in the IU options of webconf, if not already set in this way).

All the best :rainbow:

Resistive touchscreens tend to require calibration more than capacitive ones. You should use the screen calibration in zynthian’s admin menu. If it is too difficult to access this then you can plug in a USB mouse/keyboard to drive zynthian or enable VNC. Once the screen is calibrated you may find you no longer need the mouse/keyboard control.
