Trigger .wav sample with drum pad

I just want to trigger a single vibraslap sample using a drum pad on my midi controller. What’s the best way to do this? Should I make a soundfont?

Making a soundfont is currently the simpler way

On my midi controller the pads can be programmed to send on different MIDI channels, if yours can do that then that would be easier.
