Updates to Zynthian Factory SFZs - help me fix anything that's wrong

I’m in the process of updating Zynthian Factory SFZs:

  • fixing bugs like latency and inconsistent samples
  • converting from WAV to FLAC

To try it, update and then use Webconf to install this package:

Zynthian Factory Github SFZs (NEW)

NOTE: FIRST you have to uninstall the original “Zynthian Factory SFZs” package. If you forget, it’ll quickly fail silently.

So far the only fix was latency in DeepBass. There’s also latency in AcousBass, which I plan to fix. I noticed these other issues:

  • round-robin samples in Bass/GretchBass are inconsistent
  • rattles in Bass/FenderPick2 (don’t recall if fixable)
  • Drum Machines/XE8 - some samples are no-loop but should be one-shot (they stop when I lift the key.)
  • Ethnic/Mixmars - latency?
  • Organs/Harmonica - latency
  • Guitars/Strat2 - out of tune?

Are there any other issues you’ve noticed with these instruments? Please LMK. My goal is to make all these useful (or delete them.)

Also, please give the new package a try & LMK if there are any issues.

Perhaps a bit too much to ask, but normalizing the volume (loudness) of the different instruments so they are more equal to the synths would be very useful.

Yeah, I hope to do that too. The trick is figuring out what standard should be!

I see I can use X42 compressor to see RMS levels in VNC. Is there a better way anyone knows of?

Hi @jlearman !

I managed to install the new package without issues.
Perhaps we could consider using the same name for the package. This would enforce uninstalling legacy package before installing the new one.

For the rest, everything seems to work fine. The new package behaves as a drop-replacement.

We should start considering adding an “update” operation to scripts. By default it could act as “uninstall+install”, but it could be redefined to make a “git pull” when the package has been installed using “git clone”, for instance.

Thanks,

BTW … i would like to express my satisfaction and happiness regarding how all this has been managed.

The work all off you have done with this is really a great contribution and this case is a perfect example of how things sometimes happen in our zynthianland, this little corner of free software world:

The proposed task really needed to be done, but it was great and complex, requiring focus, knowledge and tools.

I must recognize that when @hannesmenzel started the thread, and @jlearman and others quickly engaged, i felt a little bit overwhelmed. I was totally focused in vangelis coding affairs, and i thought “shit! i’ve no time nor focus/knowledge to coordinate this huge task, but the project really need it and it would be a pity that all these motivation coming from community members couldn’t materialize in something more than words”.

You (@jlearman, @hannesmenzel and others) seemed to have the first 2 ingredients (focus and knowledge) but you needed the 3rd ingredient: the tools to integrate your work into zynthian OS.

Then, just in time, the “collections” were born, and i thought, “hey!! this could become the tool we need”. Then i renamed to “packages”, the zynthian-packages repository was created, and suddenly, we had the tool we needed to allow the task(s) to be started, initially with supervision from the core team, but currently in a highly autonomous way by power community members. Mr. @jlearman quickly understanded the idea and start leveraging the new tool (zynthian packages). Recently I gave him full access to the zynthian-packages repository and he started to accelerate until reaching this point. Magic!!

Big thanks to all of you! and special congratulations to @jlearman, who has pushed so hard, leveraging the new tools and leading the process.

The best,

Yeah, I think that’s how it should be eventually (or just replacing the old one completely.) But for now I want folks to easily be able to see which one they have and switch between the two.

Regardless, if you want me to do what you asked, just say so and I’ll do it. It’s a judgement call and I trust your judgement.

Update is a good idea too. Or “reload.” Since uninstall is so fast, it’d be a nice option.

You’re welcome! Frankly, doing stuff like this makes me feel like I’m being musical without having to do the hard work of actually creating music.
