Using Zynthian via USB-B

Hello Zynthian users,

after a long break from Zynthian, I’m using the time between Christmas and New Year’s to optimize my keyboard rig. I have an H4MIDI WC interface and want to use it as a MIDI host in my rig so that master keyboards and controllers can be connected to each other using a defined MIDI logic.

I’ve noticed that Zynthian, when connected to the H4MIDI WC via USB-B, doesn’t simply react as an instrument as expected.

To investigate this, I connected Zynthian (V5.1, actual ORAM staging release) to my desktop PC via USB-B and sent MIDI notes to Zynthian using Reaper and a virtual MIDI keyboard. The Zynthian MIDI log shows that the MIDI notes are being received. However, Zynthian reacts with erratic menu navigation.

It seems that Zynthian can only be remotely controlled via USB-B using a MIDI keyboard. What settings do I need to configure on Zynthian so that it can be used as a MIDI instrument via USB-B, meaning it simply listens for MIDI notes and forwards MIDI events to the instrument chains?

Wishing you all a happy new year!

You seem to be sending notes in the Master MIDI channel. You should disable Master MIDI channel or ensure that your DAW doesn’t send any event on this channel. Master MIDI channel is ONLY for UI control.

Hey @jofemodo, this nice little hint from you helped me a lot :slightly_smiling_face: . After I setup a unique midi master channel in Zynthians setup, Zynthian acts as expected. Have a nice evening.
