Zynthian 5.1 and raspberry 5

Any one of you knows if the next version of OS will be 64-bit???
thanks
Regards

Oram is 64-bit.

So, now, it’s a good idea get Raspberry 5 with 8gb RAM??

eh, Only if you’re going to load in enormous multi-gig sound fonts. 1Gig serves me fine.

There’s not much that uses 8Gig in this particular world, and we do try to use some fairly big sampler libraries… but I chose that one on the basis better to have it than regret not fitting it later.

Zynthian Oram (64-bit) will run much better on a RPi5 but note that RPi & RPi4 both also run Oram (64-bit).

Did you notice RBPi 5 can come now in a 2G version

Yes, I am aware. The thing is that since the new OS is going to be developed in 64-bit, I think that you can get more out of the raspberry and zynthian with the 8GB version. Especially with the use of the virtual sampler of zynthian and others virtual synthesizers. Keep in mind that the 32-bit version of the OS can’t work at all with 8GB of RAM. So, for the difference of price I prefer the version with more RAM. I have also seen that the new Rasp 5 with 2GB of RAM heats up less than the other versions of the rasp 5. This doesn’t worry me either since until now I have a zynthian 4 overclocked to 2GHz and the temperature never hasn’t been a problem. Does anyone have a different opinion?

I think 8GB is not needed for all midi stuff, but if I remember right: the looper uses memory only, so there it might be useful.
And having more make it more future proof (who knows what happens), but then the CPU might become the limiting factor.
I will buy the V5.1 when it comes out and add a pi5 8GB, and hoping to experiment with the looper. I hope the Zynthian might be able to evolve in the direction of the Singular Sound Aeros Loop Studio, as a 6x6 looper

8G will give you around 40 loops of 30 minutes long. That would make for quite the gig if you’re creating every loop from scratch!

pricks up his ears…
