Zynthian and the Linux Desktop - Perpetually Unfinished Masterpieces?

I found this video, titled “The Linux Desktop Is An Unfinished Masterpiece“ quite thought provoking, and a lot of the thoughts were regarding Zynthian, and how it also is both a masterpiece and perpetually unfinished. I don’t see this as a problem with Zynthian, and it kind of “goes with the territory”. But it is something to keep in mind. And YouTux Channel did a really superb job explaining the issue(s). And with nice production values!

While there’s certainly a lot of truth in there, I believe the creator of the video makes the situation on proprietary/non-libre systems look a lot better than it actually is. Both modern Mac and Windows systems are full of bugs and inconsistencies, there is no “bug free” version, they’re always perpetually unfinished as well. Music equipment gets shipped with half-assed software that they may fix, if you are lucky or if enough people complain on social media. At some point the hardware will be dated (unavailable) and the product will be abandoned, EOL, leaving it perpetually unfinished (unlike vintage gear that had much better software QA because updates required replacing physical ROMs).
Our society has come to this point where people accept bugs as logical part of anything. To see people take pride and honor in their work has become rare. A lot of people will only do the bare minimum of what is required to get the job done. I see this everywhere (not only software, just day to day life). As for software, it’s always ship fast, fix later (or never) nowadays. Almost every day-to-day thing that I do, even if it’s as simple as filling in a webform on a website, will lead to odd bugs, user interface inconsistencies, etc… As an “IT Person”, I’ve become used to it and I usually find my way around it, but for normal non-technical people it just amplifies their negative stigma towards technology.
To me, everything seems broken by design. Most things are just layers and layers of abstraction on top of each other and there’s always bound to be things going wrong. At least in open source software, if something annoys you, you can go and fix it yourself, or at least talk to the actual people who are able to fix it. Good luck doing that with proprietary software.
As for Zynthian, personally I do think there’s some weird things that need to be addressed in order for it to be a masterpiece that works for me, but I also think it’s very close to this status today. I would say “perpetually unfinished” is a good thing, as it can keep evolving, and that’s great. It’s important to have a clear path and milestones and everything will be okay

I have watched the whole video, though I was continuously tempted not to, and It’s a complete bullshit -pardon the French-. It’s all about topics, confusing freedom and choice with inefficiency, chaos and confusion. I don’t want to extend too much, IMHO these choices enrich our systems and make them better, competition is always good.

The problem he complains about -mainly too many choices to be made without proper knowledge- is easily solved by choosing linux distribution and sticking to it,

Sorry to seem a little harsh, I don’t like these people that just pretend to know everything, complaining about all and present themselves as our lifesavers. Not for me
