Boot asks for login on new V5.1 [Solved]

Hi! I just assembled the V5.1 and after first boot I got the reversed boot info, then a single “_” character on screen.
I waited for a while and nothing happened.
Then rebooted and I get a “zynthian login:” tty screen.
Any idea how to start troubleshooting this? My first step would be trying another sd, but I got none at hand, hopefully I can try one today/tomorrow.

I read some issues with the overclocking setting, but that doesn’t seem to apply to my case, as the rp5 led is just green.

So I reflashed - got scrolling code briefly on the display, then a _ at the bottom right. Then nothing. On reboot, the OPT / ADMIN button is lit purple. Green LED on Pi5 acts as if it’s reading. I’m not sure how to access using terminal given that it won’t boot.

There is no display.

Hi @mredelstein !

Don’t be worried nor frustrated. You will get your zynthian working, OK?
There is some problem with your build, but we will find and solve the issue.

Please, confirm the image version you are using is the last one.

I assume you already double-checked the wiring and everything is OK. Please, tell me if you have some doubts/problems while building.

Then , follow this steps carefully:

Burn the latest image in a good quality SD-card (>= 32GB)
Burn the firmware recovery image in a second SD-card
Boot with the recovery image, until you see the blinking green led in the RPi5
Boot with the zynthianOS image. It shouldn’t take more than 1-2 minutes to finish and you should see the splash screen before 1 minute

If this doesn’t work, please, try accessing the webconf tool:

Connect the zynthian to your router using an ethernet cable
Point your browser to one of this locations:

http://zynthian.local

http://zynthian.lan

If you get it, access the terminal and send the output from this command:

cat /root/first_boot.log

If you can’t reach the webconf tool, extract the SD-card and plug in your computer, then access the big partition and send the content of this file:

/root/first_boot.log

To be sure, i just tested the latest image (again!) with a fresh zynthian V5.1.
The boot sequence is:

Short white flash in the display
Inverted log for 1-2 seconds
Blanking with small “-” in the right-bottom corner (3-4 seconds)
Inverted log for 1/2 second
Blanking (5-8 seconds)
Splash image before 30 seconds from boot
…

Thank you for your responses!

I have used two different high quality working SD cards - one 32GB and one 256GB with the latest image.
I’ve booted with the recovery image and seen the blinking green LED.
I’ve attempted the to boot with the latest zynthianOS image.

I’ve repeated the above many times, with fresh images, many formatting of SD cards etc. I’ve even tried SD card direct in the Pi5 and only connecting the display.

One thing that’s odd to me is sometimes I’ll get the white LEDs on the board, and sometimes not. Also the LEDs under the keypad will sometimes light up differently - usually just the top left (different colors) and occasionally the whole keypad. Although the last few attempts they haven’t lit at all.

Another thing - when I first completed the build and tried running, the screen was working. I couldn’t get past the “Debian GNU/Linux 12 Zynthian ttyl
zynthian login:” screen. When I powered off / on and tried again, the screen eventually stopped functioning.

I’m trying to access the partition using Paragon NTFS on my MacBook. I can get the partition to show up but it is not accessible, even using this software so I can’t find the first_boot.log file. Not sure what to do!

The partition is not NTFS but an ext4 partition. For mounting it the best is trying with a linux machine, although i suppose there is some utility for mounting in macOS. For instance:

It’s really strange that you don’t get it working. Have you verified the MD5 sum from the download dir?

We would need some logs to know what is going on, so please, try getting it.

You could try to get the zynthian’s IP from the router to try connecting to the webconf.I’m not sure your mac is resolving the zynthian local name.

Everything seems totally OK except i can’t see the “splash generation” process for some reason.

The good is that your zynthian is totally operative, but the first boot process is frozen at this last step, preventing the GUI to be launched,.

If you could access the terminal, you could solve it very easily by running this simple command from there:

systemctl disable first_boot
reboot

For reaching the terminal you have several options:

If you have the "prompt"in the display, you could connect a keyboard and login:

user: root
password: opensynth

Then simply run the commands above.

Connect by ethernet to the router. Then use one of these the local names:

zynthian.local
zynthian.lan

or get the IP your router assign to the zynthian to access in one of this ways.

from the browser, to access webconf
from a terminal emulator, using SSH

I’m trying to understand what is going on with the first boot process and deploy a fix to avoid this kind of blocking.

Also, please answer these 3 questions:

Could you tell download date of your image?
What is the download link you used and what is the file name you downloaded?
Also, did you check the MD5 sum of this file?

I’m uploading a SD image with some changes in the first boot process.
I can’t be sure it works, because i can’t reproduce your issue, but it will generate some extra log on the first boot process. It should be ready for tomorrow.

Anyway, please, try accessing to the terminal by some of the methods i described above.
If you get it, you probably can fix the image and get it to boot. Anyway, something really strange is happening in you first boot process and it must be investigated and fixed.

It seems some error with your display. Perhaps cable is not well attached or damaged. Please, re-check both extremes. If not, it could be a damaged display or the RBPi DSI interface. In such a case i would send you a replacement. It’s very rare but not impossible.

Ok, thank you! Both ends of the display cable seem ok, and they were working right at the start. both ends seem to be seated right.

Upon wiggling the display cable on the screen end I am able to get the screen to flicker but not stay on.

UPDATE: IT’S WORKING. I had the clamp on the display cable ON TOP of the cable instead of underneath. Let this be a lesson. Thanks @jofemodo for your patience with a big ol’ noob.

I ordered a regular zynthian v5.1 kit and drove into the same issues as described above.
Now I downloaded the image again and saw, that the md5sum is again shows the wrong file, but the md5sum is ok. Just a small thingy.
