Pianoteq 9.0 released

I did the upgrade (only 29 euros) but it’s not available yet for iPad and Zynthian. I don’t like to use Pianoteq with my PC so i couldn’t test the new version.

Now, that is very promising, and I’ll certainly update soon to check this out.

I know that there are quite a few Pianoteq enthusiasts over here, while I never made a secret that, for how dearly I wanted to like it, it never completely met my expectations.

I really hope that this time it will have the body and warmth it has partly lacked so far in the mid-to-high range, at least imho.

There seems to be a new board resonance algorithm in place, which promises to do marvels.

Let’s see!

Modartt have changed the compression of the linux package and webconf doesn’t recognise it. We will need to change webconf to accept tar.xy.

Pianoteq 9 may now be installed in zynthian Vangelis. @jofemodo please check it is okay then I suggest merging this fix to Oram Staging.

FYI, I contacted Modartt and they wrote that if you buy Pianoteq 9 you can also download previous versions.

I did a quick test. It works very well and the improvement in sound quality is noticeable but not spectacular (Pianoteq 8 was very good). I must say i tried only for 15 minutes, so i suppose i’ll be surprised with a more in-depth playing.

The only problem os that i can’t see the preset parameters on the Zynthian screen.

None of them or only missing the new ones?

None of them :grimacing:

Modartt have changed their parameters. This will require a bit more work…

Can you tell if it replaced version 8 or did it install it additionally?

Replaced. You download the new version and you install it with webconf overwriting the old one.

I have just pushed a fix to Vangelis. Please update and retest.

Some changes that impact zynthian integration:

  • Loss of audio output presets. There is no simple way to switch between mono, stereo, room mic & binaural. This is replaced with individual mic control with the ability to select individual mic types, including “virtual head”, then to size and position the head. This is not currently exposed in zynthian UI. Modartt’s suggestion is to use the binaural presets but there is some push back from users who are familiar with the old method of switching between mic and binaural, e.g. for performance vs headphone practice.
  • Many more parameters. V8 exposed 93 parameters in the API, many of which we mapped to MIDI CC to provide responsive control. V9 exposes 211 which exceeds the available CCs. We can use the API to set values but it is too slow (update 50ms) for UI, hence we map required controls to CC and drive them internally via MIDI.
  • Individual control of microphones. Each mic can now be selected from a list of mic simulations and level, pan, etc. adjusted. This is not currently exposed in zynthain UI.
  • Parameter symbol naming has changed in the API. I was able to accomodate most of these changes but the effects are not yet available due to a more complex change of symbol name.
  • 16 audio outputs are now presented. V8 has 5. The 16 outputs are presented as stereo outputs within the application with just the first pair enabled by default. We can continue to use just the first pair in zynthian.

We will need to consider what parameters we want to expose. The mics seem like a good idea. You now have control over mic placement, and mix in Stage version. I don’t think that zynthian UI is particularly suitable for complex sound design. The plugin’s native GUI is better for this which may be accessed via VNC. So we should present those parameters that are actually useful within the zynthian UI workflows.

[EDIT] I have fixed the effects parameters (in Vangelis) so these now show in the UI. Be aware that snapshots / zs3 may not restore correctly if saved with previous version. The translation of symbol names may lead to some parameters not being properly recalled. This should be a one-shot issue whilst migrating from old version of zynthian to the version with PT9 support (Vangelis, and soon, Oram staging.)

[EDIT] I have also added enable, volume and pan parameters for mics 1..4. (I didn’t do mics 5..8 and only output bus 1 because otherwise it starts to get rather crowded.) But… I have also reported to Modartt that MIDI mapping of mic volume and pan is broken in 9.0.1 so only the enable is currently working. Hopefully they will fix it in a point release.

My zynthian is based on a pi4… can the pi 5 run pianoteq with 44khz or more?

I believe on the Zynthian RPi5 Pianoteq runs at a default sample rate of 48k. I don’t know about more.

I LOVE it!!!

@Aethermind, probably because I’ve rarely had my hands on a serious grand piano; I’ve only had the chance in a few shops in Bologna or at a few fairs, but I’m talking about many years ago. For me, Pianoteq has the most beautiful sound I’ve ever had under my fingers. I always use the jazz version, not because I’m a jazz musician (I’d like to, but it’s early) but because I love the more crystalline sound and (as you say) more clarity in the mids/highs. I also love dynamics; I play softly and I like that when I push hard, the difference can be heard like on a “real” piano. I’ve tried many other VSTs, but none respond to dynamics like this Pianoteq. Obviously, my ears don’t allow me to hear fine variations, but in context, I’m happy to have discovered Pianoteq (thanks to the Zynthian).

A question for @riban. Can I install Pianoteq 9 on Zynthian? Is the .tar file fixed? Thanks.

P.S. @riban I did it.

My Pianoteq 8 runs on a standalone (nonZyntian ), headless Pi5 / HifiBerryon 64 Samples/48kHz flawlessly.

@m0rvj Perfectly.

Hi @Lanfranco

It’s good to hear that you are in good spirits, about the new PT9 update.

As you know, I am not a detractor of the remarkable Modartt technological achievement (big sound, small footprint), but I have had my personal reservations about the instrument colour in the past, when is heard solo as a narrative timbre.

Probably because I am basically a rather classical sort-of pianist, although with a strong original electronic/prog/wave imprint as a keyboardist.

I will wait after having tried the new version, to possibly offer an opinion.

All the best :rainbow:
