Zynthian v4 upgrade with Raspi 5 possible?

Is it possible to upgrade the original Zynthian V4 with a Raspberry Pi 5?

Hi @dawless - yes, it is, but it involves surgery on the PC Board and the case.
see:

edit - oops - nevermind, I see you were asking about V4. I am not aware of anyone that has done that.

Hi, Thanx.

I didn’t mean the Zynthian V5, but the original Zynthian V4.

With V4, there is not an easy way of solving the Pi5’s heat dissipation problem.
Indeed, i didn’t even try it. You may have to invent something by yourself
Of course, some surgery in the case is also mandatory.

Hi !
Except adding a fan a remake a box, every others composants should work directly?

Yes, in theory. I didn’t test.

There is a zynthian-pwm-fan software component that manages a fan in a very elegant way.

Needs a Raspberry Pi GPIO pin, and a little bit of external electronics ( A resistor, a transistor and a diode) and a connection to the +5V pin and Ground.

Thank you for your answers.
I may make a new case in an aluminum case.

Just linking the thread where this has been done, could not find it anymore using search, may help others.

@jofemodo How does cooling work in the V5 exactly? I see that there is a large cooling block that is mounted on the RPi5, but I’m assuming it’s just there to transfer the heat to the case. So how does the heat transfer from the cooling block to the case - is the RPi mounted upside down on the mainboard (it looks like it would be in the pictures I can find) with the cooling block transferring the heat to the bottom of the case?

Exactly like you said. The pi is mounted upside-down and the thermal block acts as a massive thermal bridge that transfer the heat to the case bottom. Simple, efficient and totally silent.
