No sound after update (WARNING:zynthian_autoconnect.cb_jack_xrun)

Hi

Earlier today I tried doing a full software update of my Zynthian, and unfortunatelty sound is no longer working. Why did I do an update even though everything was working perfectly and I wasn’t missing anything you ask? I don’t know… :expressionless:

The log keeps saying WARNING:zynthian_autoconnect.cb_jack_xrun: Jack Audio XRUN! again and again…

How did you perform the update?

There have been times when updates have broken snapshots. Have you tried removing all layers then adding a new layer?

Your screenshot show there are no synth engines running and nothing is routed to main audio outputs.

Did apt update, apt full-update and afterwards, when the issue started, also rpi-update (because that fixed issues I had when I first build it). Also did a software update via the webconfig.

Have tried removing all layers, etc. No change.

Ah! Don’t do that!!!

Zynthian is not Debian. It relies on specific software modules and such an update breaks it. (We need to put in measures to avoid this.) You should only use the Zynthian update methods.

Or do I need to completely start over with a new image? (it’s a pain since I need to dismantle the whole case to access the SD card, so I’d rather not).

Ok, I started with a new image, but are having a few issues.

From a clean image the Hifiberry isn’t showing up when I do a cat /proc/asound/cards.

If I do a rpi-update, then the Hifiberry IS showing up - but then I’m back to the initial problem in this thread.

What image did you use? Did you perform a Zynthian update? You mustn’t furtle at the command line - Zynthian is a delicate flower that doesn’t like its inards tinkered!

I used zynthianos-last-stable and have done the Zynthian update via webconfig. (after going back to yet another clean image to revert the rpi-update).

Okay - so you have a clean updated image. Your initial post was that when you run apt update, apt full-update the Zynthian stopped working which is expected behaviour. Now that you have reverted back to the build, what problem do you now have?

The problem is that the Hifiberry isn’t being registred at all. Doesn’t show up in aplay -l or cat /proc/asound/cards

A side note though - when I originally build it I had to do a ‘rpi-update’ to get things working (as described here: Error with HiFiBerry DAC2 Pro).

When I do the ‘rpi-update’ now, the sound card is detected - but something else fails (I keep getting the error from the original post: WARNING:zynthian_autoconnect.cb_jack_xrun)

Okay - so maybe there is something changed by rpi-update which supports the DAC2 Pro but breaks other things Zynthian depends on. You could try each Hifiberry soundcard in webconf with a reboot between each. If none work then you could do a rpi-update and run aply -l, dmesg and grep dtoverlay /boot/config.txt again which may show us what is required to get this working. (You may subsequently need to go back to the start again but hopefully we will learn how to fix Zynthian to support this card.)

Ok, going through the various hifiberry options.

Dac+ Light and Dac+ Rtc lets Zynthian boot properly, but there’s no audio out (no volume controls in alsamixer either).

aplay -l gave this on Dac+ Light:

By the way the documentation for the Dac2 Pro says to use dtoverlay=hifiberry-dacplus
